26/09/2008 - Replace 0870 Numbers with 0844 Numbers
With Ofcom suggesting changes to 0870 numbers in December 2008 we are seeing a massive migration to either 0844 numbers or 0871 numbers. 0870 numbers will no longer generate revenue share payments for the owner of the number. Historically carriers or resellers who sold the numbers would receive a payment for routing the call. As the cost to call 0870 numbers is being reduced to fall in line with the cost of a national call so the out payments finish. This change will impact hundreds of resellers and hundreds of thousands of customers. It is the plan for most resellers to migrate these numbers to either 0844 numbers or 0871 numbers. It is our understanding that 0870 numbers will (from early 2009) be charged by the carriers for receiving the call so if you are a company that has one of these numbers and you are earning money this will change to become a chargeable service.

The only options that people have to receive an out payment will be to take 0844 numbers or 0871 numbers. 0844 numbers are becoming increasingly popular due to the smaller cost to call them (calling an 0844 number usually costs 5p per minute where as 0871 numbers can cost up to 10p per minute).
